During an A.I. campaign it was found that 84 of 560 rams (15%) were infected with haemosporidia. After they had recovered from infection, 53% were impotent, at least during the remainder of the breeding season. Those that were not impotent produced semen of poor quality. Cases were most numerous in July, in the middle of the breeding season in Bulgaria. Treatment with morphine or the Russian gonadotrophic preparation 'gravohormon' seemed to be useful in restoring fertility, but a better approach was diminazene prophylaxis coupled with tick control.
