Oestradiol was implanted (1 or 3 implants/ male ) in cryptorchid and castrated males , and the serum LH and FSH levels 2 wk later were compared with those in unimplanted controls and in intact males . The oestradiol implants reduced the serum LH and FSH levels in a dose-dependent manner. Subsequently, intact males were immunised against testosterone and oestradiol, and their blood serum was measured for testosterone, LH and FSH. Relative to intact males , rams immunised against steroid conjugates exhibited elevated LH and FSH concentrations. From these results it is concluded that secretion of FSH and LH is regulated to some degree by testicular steroids.
