For on average 10 days a total of 15 premature male infants from 1000 to 2400 g bodyweight were infused with Aminofusin L 600, Lipofundin S 10%, fructose 10% and KH2PO4 13.6% or with Aminofusin L ANN, Lipofundin S 10%, glucose and KH2PO4 13.6% supplying 0.50 or 0.44 g N/kg bodyweight daily. N balances were always positive and retention of N was 60 and 61%. Free amino acid patterns in serum and urine differed. With the first infusion mixture the amino acid solution, devised for use with adults, caused disturbances of metabolism of some of the amino acids that resembled known inborn errors of metabolism; disturbances were less with the other infusion mixture. All commercial amino acid solutions are of the first type.Intakes of between 150 and 164 ml water/kg bodyweight had no effect on fluid regulation. The clinical condition of the infants was good, they gained weight daily and there were no severe local or general complications.
