The frequency of animal poisoning by warfarin

A total of 151 (14%) of an estimated possible 1050 replies were received to a questionnaire enclosed with an issue of the Veterinary Record. According to these replies the number of animals thought to have been poisoned by warfarin in the period July, 1971, to July, 1972, in 151 practices in the United Kingdom was 685 (544 dogs, 56 cats, 36 pigs, three horses, two cattle, one rabbit and 43 unspecified animals). Extrapolation of these results indicates that 4763 domestic animals were poisioned by warfarin in one year in the United Kingdom; 3783 (80%) of these were dogs, 389 (8%) were cats. Of the 483 dogs and 47 cats treated with vitamin K, 81% and 77% recovered, respectively, compared with 36 and 25% of those not so treated.
