For 11 days a diet of calcium caseinate 1 and sucrose 6.5 or one of glucose syrup, a partial hydrolysis of starch, 6.5 g/kg bodyweight were given by stomach tube to 6 men and 4 women 20 to 25 years old to supply 10% less energy than requirement. Mean loss of weight on sucrose was similar in men and women but on glucose syrup was significantly greater in men than in women. Mean overall weight loss was significantly greater on glucose syrup than on sucrose in men, but not significantly so in women.
