An epizootic of protozoan enteritis in a closed mouse colony

Enteritis broke out in a closed mouse colony ten weeks after introduction of a new feed. The disease was characterized by mucoid discharge, foetid odour, low morbidity rate, protracted course, and sporadic deaths. Enteritis was associated with an overwhelming infection of Giardia muris and Hexamita muris. The overgrowth of these protozoa was precipitated by changing to a new diet, which was pasteurized prior to feeding. The disease was self-limiting.
