Glucose disappearance rate in symptomatic neonatal hypoglycemia

Eleven infants with symptomatic neonatal hypoglycaemia and 8 control newborn infants with normal blood glucose values were given rapid injections of glucose, 1 g/kg as a 50% solution by vein. The mean glucose disappearance rate/min in the hypoglycaemic infants, 2.8 plus or minus 0.1%, was significantly higher than that in the normal infants, 1.2 plus or minus 0.1%. Initial plasma insulin values were significantly higher in the hypoglycaemic than in the normal infants, 16.8 plus or minus 3.9 compared with 3.5 plus or minus 1.0 mu U/ml; in the hypoglycaemic infants plasma growth hormone values, 16.6 plus or minus 5.7 ng/ml initially, rose to 36 plus or minus 10 ng/ml at 10 min and to 64 plus or minus 13 ng/ml by 60 min.
