Technique for chronic cannulation of the canine thoracic duct

A moderately successful surgical technique for implanting a T-shaped, silicone rubber cannula into the canine thoracic duct was developed. Samples of lymph could be intermittently collected while normal lymph circulation contained through natural channels, with minimal interference between sample collections. The dogs were mobile, and lymph samples were readily collected. The dogs' shaking and scratching sometimes contributed to equipment failure, but clotting of lymph inside the cannula was the ultimate cause of failure.
