This paper summarizes the 2006 revised consensus recommendations on hospital-based management of severely malnourished children, as advocated by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics. These recommendations include a case definition of severe malnutrition and guidelines on initial assessment and management/prevention of concurrent conditions, such as hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, infections and micronutrient deficiencies. Management relevant to catch-up growth, sensory stimulation and emotional support, and follow-up recovery are also discussed.
