Control of food intake during growth of a Walker 256 carcinosarcoma

After 8 days' adjustment to a standard semisynthetic diet, adult male rats continued on the diet or were given it diluted with 50% nonnutritive bulk, and after 7 further days half the rats on either diet were given Walker 256 carcinosarcoma by injection; the experiment continued for 27 days thereafter. The increased intake in response to dilution of the diet become gradually depressed in the rats with tumours, but only during the 3rd week of tumour growth, in contrast to results with acute diet dilution experiment (NAR 43, 2444), and weight deficits induced by diet dilution and tumour development were not additive. Though the condition of tumours and of hosts was poorer when the diluted diet was given, there was no significant difference in total size of intact tumours. Tumour growth but not dilution of diet induced significant increases in adrenal and spleen weights. The feeding response of the rats to repeated daily injections of insulin was unaffected by tumour development.
