Ribiero and Cardoso describe the problems which have been met in Guinea-Bissau in the efforts to improve living conditions for the rural population through a socialist model, while preserving the achievements of traditional rural society. The main achievements have been in the provision of better health and education services but although numbers being educated have doubled, the content of education has not been adapted to the needs of the rural population. This is illustrated by the case study of changes in the Biombo peninsula. Achinger's contribution looks more closely at the production potential of the peasant farming sector in the three main cultivation areas (salt water polders, dry area, moist area) and discusses the success of government incentives to increased production. The final paper is a detailed study of changes in a single village from 1976 to 1986.
