A survey of procedures used in clinical mycology laboratories

Of the 221 laboratories in USA included in this survey, most used inadequate procedures for the isolation and identification of fungi, particularly when investigating rarer diseases such as nocardiosis or actinomycosis. The use of short-cut methods and incorrect times or incubation temps. which were reported from some laboratories could result in errors of diagnosis. It is recommended that a primary isolation medium capable of supporting the growth of pathogenic fungi be used, and that cultures obtained should be sent to reference laboratories for further study. The exclusive use of media with selective properties is not recommended.
