To review the latest research progress on keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), to thoroughly understand its basic characteristics and application methods and to lay a solid foundation for the research and development of new KGF medicines and improving the quality of skin substitutes. Domestica and international literatures on KGF in recent years were extensively reviewed and analyzed. KGF was secreted by mesenchymal cells and its receptors were distributed in epithelium to promote the proliferation, migration and differentiation of epithelial cell specifically, which closely related to the organ development, wound healing, tumorigenesis and immune reconstruction. KGF can be used to improve wound healing and the performance of skin substitutes. However, the structure of KGF needs to be changed to eliminate its side effects and purify its promoting effect on epithelial cell growth.
