In the geriatric client who was formerly recognized as an artist, the artist's common fear of not living up to past works is intensified by the very real possibility of diminished capabilities. In 1959, at the age of 66, Abraham Blustein, a successful and respected artist, suffered the first of two strokes that eventually left him aphasic and paralyzed on his right side. He did not resume his art activities for sixteen years despite the efforts of various nursing home staff members to encourage him. This paper traces my work in art therapy with Mr. Blustein over a period of seven months, from October 1975 through May 1976. It focuses particularly on the need to devise special measures to free such clients from their preconceived notions of art.
