Nasal turbinate atrophy in newborn rabbit infected with Alcaligenes bronchisepticus of pig origin

Bordetella bronchiseptica from a diseased pig was used in doses of 1.8X106 to inoculate nine 5-day-old rabbits intranasally. Ten 6-day-olds were similarly inoculated with B. bronchiseptica derived from a healthy rabbit. All the animals were killed after 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 4 weeks. Of the rabbits infected with the pig strain, six had atrophy of the nasal turbinates; there was severe atrophy in two rabbits 2 weeks after infection; exudative bronchopneumonia was present up to 3 weeks after infection. The rabbits infected with the rabbit strain had no atrophy, but there was mucous exudation in the nasal cavities, with hyperaemia of the mucous membrane, and some had bronchopneumonia.
