Transmission of tegumentary leishmaniasis in Argentina

A discussion on the epidemiological aspects of 4 leishmaniasis outbreaks in Argentina is presented, focusing on the new scenarios of transmission. The outbreaks include those in Urugua-i (2004), Esperanza (1998), Alberdi (2003) and Monteros-Simoca (2004). Four scenarios of transmission were observed: (1) sylvatic with transmission in primary or residual vegetation; (2) sylvatic with eventual peridomestic transmission due to changes within patches of residual vegetation; (3) sylvatic with peri-domestic transmission in domiciles contiguous with residual vegetation; and (4) peridomestic in rural, ruralized, peri-urban or urban-rural interphase environments. All the epidemics since 1985 were consistent with the scenarios characterized, indicating that the typification of the transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Argentina has been comprehensive.
