The apparent transmission of leishmaniasis between 2 dogs in the UK is reported. A dog imported from Spain was initially diagnosed as positive for leishmaniasis soon after release from quarantine. The dog which has been treated with courses of the antimonial drug glucantime and prednisolone had shown ocular and systemic signs of the disease as well as skin lesions. Three years after the dog was imported another dog from the same household developed skin lesions and was confirmed as positive for leishmaniasis. This dog was bred by the owners, was not related to the first dog and had never left the country. As the normal vector for the disease in the sandfly is not known to occur in the UK it is suggested that transmission had occurred directly; possibly by contact with skin lesions. The risk of direct transmission to man is noted.
