True cost of guideline implementation

Towards the end of 2005 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) released a new clinical practice guideline on pressure ulcer management. It is approximately 500 pages long, and includes a detailed slide set. Such a focus on pressure ulcers was, no doubt, warmly welcomed by all readers of Journal of Wound Care. What may be less enthusiastically received is the observation in the report that implementing the guideline's recommendations will have no cost implications for the NHS. In short, this means we may be expected to implement the guideline, but additional funding will not be forthcoming to support this.
