The incidence of Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal specimens from gynecologic patients

Vaginal smears from 61 female patients attending the Gynecology Polyclinic of the Cumhuriyet University Medical Hospital in Turkey were examined for the presence of T. vaginalis. Three vaginal samples were taken from each patient; one each for culture examination, direct preparation, and Giemsa staining. Thirty-nine (63.9%) patients had vaginal discharges and itching. Only 2 (3.2%) patients were positive for T. vaginalis infection.
