Viral hepatitis in children and special reference to its treatment with emetine

1) From 1938 to 1967 we have treated 600 cases of viral hepatitis in the- Pediatric Hospital Prof. "Dr. Pedro de Elizalde", with clorhidrate of emetine 1 rag/Kg/day, in total no more of 19 subcutaneus inyections each 24 houres. 2) In 100 % of the cases the clinical cure was obtained between 7 and 14 days instead of 22 and 38 days as usual (in 30 cases the cure was confirmed by complete laboratory study, and in 70 cases by partial studies). 3) The age of the treated children was between 1 and 12 years. One of us (J.C.T.) has had excellent results in his private pratice with the same dosis of emetine in the treatment of viral hepatitis of adults. 4) We have never had undesirable effects due to the compounds which was perfectly tolerated; but we have had immediate favorable effects on appetite and general good feeling. 5) We have not had prolongate cases or intercurrent relapse. 6) Because of the extraordinary results obtained in the viral hepatitis with emetine and excellent results reported in other virosis (keratoconjuctivitis 17 herpes of the ophtalmic nerve 25 65 herpes simplex" stomatitis 8° inespecific granuloma 2" we believed that emetine should be considered the primary etiologic treatment of viral hepatitis. 7) In this paper we also describe the present stages of viral hepatitis in children.
