The effects of treatment with emetine and dehydroemetine on rat skeletal muscle have been studied. Emetine and dehydroemetine caused accumulation of granules in the sarcomere with displacement, compression and even disappearance of the myofibrils. Z disc abnormalities were also produced. Mitochondria were absent from severely damaged areas. No evidence of recovery was discernible in specimens taken three weeks after completion of treatment with the drugs.
