Snakebite envenomation in India: a rural medical emergency

A retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Pondicherry, India. During the period November 2002-August 2005, fifty children (9 months-12 years of age) were admitted for snake bite envenomation. 42 were haemotoxic and 8 were neurotoxic bite cases. There were 9 deaths, all due to haemotoxic bites. Four of the cases with neurotoxic bites required ventilatory support. Five patients had disseminated intravascular coagulation, 9 had acute renal failure, 33 presented with cellulitis and 6 had anaphylaxis to antivenin administration.
