A double-blind investigation involving 18 patients and 75 cycles was carried out in order to test the efficacy of SH-850 containing 0.5 mg norgestrel plus 0.05 mg ethinyl estradiol in one tablet in the treatment of functional dysmenorrhea. Eighteen patients received SH-850 or placebo from the fifth to the 25th day of their cycles and a total of 75 observations were obtained for final analysis. All patients who received SH-850 responded satisfactorily to the medication. The effectiveness of SH-850 has a highly statistical significance as compared to the placebo. The amount of menstrual flow was decreased by the administration of SH-850. Few side effects of SH-850 were observed. It is concluded that SH-850 may be used effectively for the relief of pain and other accompanying symptoms of functional dysmenorrhea.
