Serum types of the Nordland horse and the Norwegian trotter

The frequency of albumin, transferrin, prealbumin and Hb alleles was investigated on blood samples from 966 Doele Trotter, 60 Fjord, 66 Nordland and 147 Finnish horses and 6 Welsh and 9 Exmoor ponies; data are tabulated. A comparison of the serum types of the Nordland and Doele horses showed that a close relationship between the 2 breeds is unlikely, whereas there were greater similarities between the Nordland and the Fjord and Finnish horses, all 3 breeds having a high frequency of TfF and TfD. The presence of TfH in the Nordland horse and the gene frequencies in the prealbumin system indicate a closer relationship of this breed to Finnish than to Fjord horses.
