The impact of conditions for a self-determined life at home of people needing nursing care is assessed in this longitudinal study. Individuals needing nursing care, carers, and, where relevant, professional nurses were interviewed. The individuals needing nursing care have a better chance of self-determination, if they live in their own home with a large and sustainable social network. They should be well informed and insist on their inclusion in the decision-making process. Professional nursing staff must take the individual circumstances into consideration.
