The therapeutic effect of pindolol (15 mg daily for 30 days) and verapamil (320 mg daily for 30 days) in 21 cases suffering from hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy was studied. The following parameters were examined: subjective disturbances, functional capacity, variations of heart rate, changes of the 4th sound, systolic times, carotideal pulse, arrhythmia revealed by the ECG (Holter's technique). The subjective disturbances have been improved by verapamil; neither drug changed functional capacity, the 4th sound, systolic times or the pattern of carotideal pulse; both drugs reduced the number of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, but did not eliminate the most severe ventricular patterns.
