Effect of pyridoxal phosphate on lipolytic activity in vitro

Subcutaneous adipose tissue was taken by biopsy from obese patients and from persons of normal weight at appendectomy. Lipolytic activity of the tissue was significantly low in the obese group. When pyridoxal phosphate was added it increased not significantly in the tissue from normal controls, significantly in that from obese women but not at all in that from obese men. Pyridoxal phosphate increased the lipolytic activity of serum to the same extent in both groups. It also stimulated lipolysis in adipose tissue of rats. Studies with Tween-80, bound to protein, suggested that pyridoxal phosphate activates lipoprotein lipase. It is suggested that vitamin B-6 may be of value in activating lipolysis in obese patients.
