In summary, using these criteria in conjunction with the known history, an approximate estimate of the duration of the thrombus can be made. It must be remembered that different parts of the same thrombus may be of different ages and the distal segment is usually the oldest. It is not recommended that a definite age in days or weeks be offered as an opinion, as variation is so great, but that the histological appearances be matched with the circumstantial information, to decide whether the probable age of the thrombus is compatible or incompatible with the history.
