Some applications of strain gauges in pharmaceutical technology are described: measurement of compressional forces; testing of the hardness of tablets; continuous registration of weight variations. The preliminary results indicate that the method described to measure the elastic and plastic deformation can give information on the compression characteristics of granulates. A new device for the determination of the hardness of tablets makes the measuring of the fissility of tablets possible, so that the phenomenon of capping can be quantified. Continuous registration of weight variations is used for the determination of the properties of powders and granulates. Since the gauges appeared also applicable at low temperature, in vacuum and under extreme conditions of relative humidity the freeze drying procedure can be studied in this way.
