This article discusses some important concepts on behaviour change communication as it relates to human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Southern and Eastern Africa. An alternative approach to behaviour change communication is discussed. The approach takes into consideration community participation and ownership, as human rights components, in dealing with HIV/AIDS. The concept highlights the relevance of various community-based interventions to fight HIV/AIDS.
