Splenomegaly and iron deficiency anemia

Splenomegaly is not a feature of iron deficiency anemia, and it is common clinical practice to consider any such association as probably unrelated. Of 100 patients with iron deficiency anemia seen at the Mayo Clinic during recent years, the tip of the spleen could be palpated in only 3 patients.' However no data is available concerning age and the status of the spleen following treatment with iron. Also, no other documented reports are available in the literature. We describe 2 adult patients with severe iron deficiency anemia and splenomegaly that subsided following iron supplementation.
