Three cases of massive hemorrhage from solitary ulcer of the rectum are presented. Each occurred in a patient seriously ill from causes unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract. The bleeding occurred suddenly and without prodromal symptoms and was life threatening in each patient. Treatment is directed toward local control of the bleeding point and diversion of the fecal stream. A combined abdominotransanal approach utilizing a low colotomy is a useful way of identifying and controlling this source of hemorrhage.
