Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery is a successful treatment modality for patients with refractory or complicated gastroesophageal reflux disease. Population based studies have shown an increase in the number of cases performed on a yearly basis throughout the country emphasizing its growing acceptance to treat this disease. A lower threshold for surgical intervention may be justified in the care of these patients, however it must be emphasized that the success of this operation depends on the selection of the appropriate patient and application of the proper surgical principles and technique.
