An outbreak of fascioliasis in Danish zoo animals which grazed on a permanently wet lowland area is described. The area had previously been used for domestic cattle and snail habitats were numerous; infection was probably acquired by eating overwintered larvae originating from the infected domestic cattle. Over 5 years, the incidence and intensity of infection increased, particularly in a herd of American buffalo, all of which died or had to be killed. Clinical disease and death occurred in other species of cattle and in sheep and goats. The area was abandoned for permanent grazing.
