Role of Entamoeba histolytica in acute watery diarrhea in hospitalized under-five children

156 children, <5 years old, who presented with acute watery diarrhoea (less than 72 h duration) at the Dr RML Hospital, New Delhi, Delhi, India during the period 1 June-30 August 2001, as well as 156 controls were investigated. Only 2 children with diarrhoea (1.3%) had evidence of acute E. histolytica infection (trophozoites in faecal specimens), while 12 (7.7%) had E. histolytica cysts present in faecal specimens. In the control group. 14 (8.97%) were cyst passers.
