Important species differences exist in the response of carotid chemoreceptors to exogenous dopamine, noradrenaline and 5-HT, since none of these stimulated the carotid body of the cat, although they did stimulate that of the dog. The characteristic response of the cat's carotid body to dopamine was depression.
