Failures or unnecessary delays at passing pulmonary artery catheters will continue to occur for many reasons. One of these reasons is pressure wave damping because of small air bubbles within the catheter lumen. This problem may occur because of an inadequate system check before catheter placement. Most individuals adhere to the following sequence when checking out their catheter system: 1) transducer and monitor calibration; 2) balloon inflation and inspection; 3) thermister test; 4) proximal and distal lumen attachment to transducers; and 5) fluid flush.
