Free amino acids were estimated in sow's colostrum collected immediately after parturition. Proline and glutamic acid accounted for about one-third of the free amino acid pool. Leucine was the predominant essential amino acid in the very early colostrum. The role of different amino acids is discussed. A significant correlation was found between colostral free amino acids and changes of free amino acids in plasma of piglets after the first colostrum supply.
