Mini-incision for post-partum sterilization of women: a multicentred, multinational prospective study

A multicentered, multinational prospective study of the short-term complications associated with miniincision for postpartum sterilization of women carried out within 3 days of delivery was undertaken to determine the safety of this approach. Follow-up observations were made at 8 h, 1 wk and 6 wk following operation on 1026 women admitted to the study in 7 centers. The characteristics of the women were similar in all centers. Major complications occurred in 3 subjects (0.3%) and minor complications in 43 subjects (4.2%). For women undergoing the procedure under general anesthesia, there was both a longer incision and longer duration of operation than for women having the procedure under regional or local anesthesia. Miniincision for postpartum sterilization is a safe procedure which can be simply and rapidly performed under regional or local anesthesia.
