Changes in the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems in females using intrauterine contraceptive device

To investigate the coagulation and fibrinolytic effects of Lippes loops in women, 50 females between 25 and 40 years wearing Lippes loop for 6 to 24 months were given several blood tests. 50 women without IUDs served as controls. Significant differences were absent in bleeding time, prothrombin time and index, platelet count, plasma recalcification time, euglobulin lysis time, and dilute blood clot lysis time. Coagulation time was faster in the controls (p.5); Hess' capillary fragility test was negative in normal women and positive in 1/5 of women with loop. Platelet count was higher in the controls (p.8). Clot retraction was higher in the controls (p..05). Thromboplastin generation after 8 minutes was lower in the test group (p.5). Dilute blood clot lysis time had a longer range in the test group (p.6). It was concluded that aside from a qualitative platelet defect in a minority of cases, there must be another cause for excessive menstrual bleeding.
