The existence of imidazoline receptors was suggested based on the results of investigation of the central hypotensive action of the alpha 2-adrenoreceptor agonist clonidine containing imidazoline group in the molecule structure. Experiments on the rostral venterolateral medulla oblongata (RVLM) neurons in rats showed that not less that 36% of specific binding sites in this zone differ from adrenergic and recognize imidazoline derivatives. Agmatine has proved to be an endogenous ligand of such imidazoline receptors.
