Criteria for inclusion of patients in this survey were the clinical appearance of tinea of the glabrous skin, with confirmation of the diagnosis by demonstration of fungus in skin scrapings. Specimens were cultured on Sabouraud's dextrose agar with cycloheximide (0.5 g/l) and chloramphenicol (0.05 g/l), and incubated at 26-28 deg C. Fungi isolated from 100 cases comprised Trichophyton rubrum (76), Epidermophyton floccosum (11), T. mentagrophytes (6), Microsporum canis (5) and T. violaceum (2). T. rubrum was isolated from 24 (77.4%) of 31 cases of tinea circinata; other fungi isolated were E. floccosum (1), T. mentagrophytes (1) and M. canis (5). T. rubrum was isolated from 18 (69.2%) of 26 cases of tinea cruris and 34 (79%) of 43 tinea pedis cases. E. floccosum was isolated from 7 of the tinea cruris patients and 3 of those with tinea pedis. T. mentagrophytes was isolated from 5 cases of tinea pedis and T. violaceum from 1 of each of the 2 groups. Racial distributions of the infecting fungi are presented.
