The effective interstitial concentration of some biologically important cations can be measured continuously by means of glass microelectrodes. Construction and calibration of these electrodes as well as amplification and processing of the electrode signals are described. On the basis of experimental results obtained an skeletal and heart muscle we discuss the importance of changes in the interstitial ion activity and the problems of the potentiometric ion measurement by glass microelectrodes.
