This review summarizes recent advances in the understanding of the involvement of macrophages/microglial cells in the development of cerebral Plasmodium falciparum malaria, in relation with transforming growth factors beta 1, -2 and -3, cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, heme oxygenase-1, myeloid-related proteins MRP8 and MRP14, and urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (CD87). It is concluded that, in brains of patients with cerebral malaria, microglial cells and macrophages secrete a series of cytokines and other signalling molecules, and are thus involved in the regulation of local tissue responses in inflammation, blood brain barrier breakdown and lesion formation.
