Lipomas of the duodenum: report of a case

Although lipomas are frequently found in the small bowel, they do not often occur in the duodenum. Symptoms are unusual, and the tumor may be an incidental finding on x-ray examination. This article reports a typical case of lipoma of the duodenum. The patient was an overweight man, 64 years of age. He had been in a severe auto accident 7 months previously and at that time had suffered from melena and pain. The symptoms had subsided but recurred shortly before admission. The remainder of the history revealed only an episode of gastritis 5 years before. At the time of the present admission, x-ray study of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract demonstrated a globular defect in the proximal part of the duodenum. The physical examination revealed little and laboratory examinations showed only mild anemia. The possible diagnoses included submucosal hematoma, lipoma, or intrinsic polypoid lesion of the duodenum. At surgery a large globular tumor with an ulcerated exterior surface was found. The lipoma was excised and the patient recovered uneventfully.
