Role of some environmental factors in the development of endemic goiter (a review)

This review presents alternative causes of endemic goitre since iodine deficiency alone cannot be responsible for the widespread incidence of this disease. Etiological factors for endemic goitre, such as the imbalance of trace elements, the use of contaminated drinking water, the toxic action of chemicals, exposure to ionizing radiation and genetic factors are discussed. Prevalence rates of endemic goitre in Russia and other countries of the world are presented. In 2000, endemic goitre was eradicated in developed countries. Yet in some regions of Russia, the prevalence rate has increased from 5.13% (in the period 1965-1975) to 30-35% (2000). The causes of this significant increase in disease incidence are discussed.
