72 cases of botulism were reported in Poland in 2000 with a corresponding incidence of 0.19 per 100 000 population. 56 (incidence, 0.38) and 16 (incidence, 0.07) cases were recorded in the rural and urban areas, respectively. In 2000, there were 46 outbreaks involving one person, 7 outbreaks involving 2 persons and 4 outbreaks involving 3. Meat dishes were found to be the main source of botulinum toxin (41 cases; 56.9%). Homemade conserves prepared from pork (18.1%) comprised a large proportion of meat dishes consumed. The other botulism cases were associated with home-made sausages (13.9%), canned fish (12.5%), commercially-produced sausages (12.5%) and dishes from poultry (11.1%). Two persons died of botulism.
