Botulism in foxhounds

An outbreak of a paralytic condition in 8 of a pack of 40 foxhounds is reported. The hounds were fist affected the day after a meal of eight raw casualty sheep and calf carcasses. The three worst affected hounds died 4-8 days after the meal. Clostridium botulinum type C toxin was detected in serum samples from three hounds and in a faecal sample from one hound, type A toxin was detected in a faecal sample from another hound.
