This article discusses the surveillance techniques currently being used, including molecular methods, to monitor foodborne diseases in different countries, especially in Europe. The importance of rapid detection of foodborne disease outbreaks on public health protection are emphasized. Suggestions on necessary modifications of the existing surveillance techniques are given, taking into consideration the social perception of foodborne disease risk and costs of prevention measures.
