Toxoplasmosis in a western grey kangaroo in the UK

This article presents the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in a two-year-old female western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) in southwestern England, Great Britain, UK (September 2000). The animal developed respiratory disease, manifesting as tachypnoea and dyspnoea. Due to poor response to treatment with enrofloxacin, frusemide and carprofen, it was euthanized on day 5 of clinical disease. Protozoan organisms were observed in the alveolar walls, vascular endothelium and bronchiolar smooth muscles. A diagnosis of toxoplasmal pneumonia was confirmed by immunohistochemistry.
